Gym search is dominated by class format, not service
Most local-service verticals are searched by service: "plumber near me", "dental cleaning [city]". Gyms are searched by class format: "yoga studio [neighborhood]", "barre class [city]", "boxing gym [city]", "powerlifting gym [city]", "kids gymnastics [city]".
The implication for site architecture: most gym sites are built around services ("Personal Training", "Group Classes", "Nutrition Coaching") which match almost nothing people search. The pages that rank are organized around the class formats people search for, not the services the gym sells.
This post is the class-format architecture and the trust signals that convert visitors into trial members.
The class-format matrix
For a multi-format studio (the most common case for SEO-relevant gyms), the URL structure should be one page per class format per neighborhood served:
/classes/yoga/west-loop-chicago/
/classes/yoga/wicker-park-chicago/
/classes/pilates/west-loop-chicago/
/classes/barre/west-loop-chicago/
/classes/spin/west-loop-chicago/
/classes/strength-training/west-loop-chicago/
